Here are the details of Sing-Folk Speak 2013:

Date: Tuesday 23^rd July (7pm +)

Venue: The Greystones (Greystones Road, Sheffield, S11 7BS)

Performers: Nancy Kerr and Ray Hearne

Admission: Free!

At this year’s Sing-Folk-Speak, we’ll be talking about the city and the countryside in folk song. Nancy Kerr and Ray Hearne will be on hand to provide the songs. They’ll be joined in conversation by academics and by the general public. Come down on the 23^rd July and share your thoughts on the following:

·         What do folk songs tell us about the environments we live in?

·         What do they tell us about the places we used to live in?

·         Is folk music a rural thing? Or does it come from city-dweller’s nostalgia for the countryside?

·         Does folk music have anything in common with twenty-first century urban music in the way that both approach the city?

·         Does South Yorkshire folk music have a distinctive identity that sets it apart from the folk music emerging from other places?

·         Do folk songs reflect differences in the way that country and city people talk or think (in South Yorkshire and further afield)?

·         Is the folk music of South Yorkshire grounded in an urban or a rural identity?

This event has been funded by the University of Sheffield, and will appear as part of the ‘Yorkshire Voices’ project.
